How do I know if my child has middle ear infection with tubes?

Answer Icon

Typically, there is only one symptom of middle ear infection with tubes: drainage from the ear, also known as otorrhea. This drainage can be thin (milky), thick, or sticky and mucus-like. You can read more about middle ear infection with tubes here.

If you suspect your child has middle ear infection with tubes, talk to your doctor to get a professional diagnosis and treatment.

What do tubes have to do with my child's middle ear infection?

Answer Icon

A tympanostomy tube is a tiny cylinder that is inserted through the eardrum to create an airway into the middle ear. The tube can provide ventilation, prevent the buildup of fluids behind the eardrum, and equalize pressure in the ear. Tubes are often recommended when someone experiences repeated middle ear infections. This condition most commonly occurs in children but can also be present in teens.

Tympanostomy tubes reduce the likelihood of middle ear infection. Unfortunately, 15% to 26% of patients with tubes still get infections. This is known as middle ear infection with tubes, or acute otitis media with tympanostomy tubes (AOMT). You can read more about middle ear infection with tubes here.
